The Truth About Alycia Debnam-Carey’s Relationship With Eliza Taylor

Alycia Debnam-Cary and Eliza Taylor are two actresses best known for their work on The 100 (the very same CW series that saw a guest appearance by singer Shawn Mendes). On the show, the two women memorably shared a romance onscreen, which led fans to ship Debnam-Cary’s Lexa and Taylor’s Clarke Griffin.

Unfortunately, their love story was cut short after Debnam-Carey was killed off the show. The 100 also ended its run after seven seasons, which dashed hopes of any type of further onscreen reunion between the two actors. Since the show ended, fans have been wondering what the actresses’ relationship was like behind the scenes.

Here’s What They’ve Said About Working Together

Whereas Taylor has been with the show since the beginning, Debnam-Carey’s Lexa was only introduced midway through the second season, in an episode entitled Fog of War. When Lexa first came on, viewers were immersed with Clarke’s ongoing love affair with Finn (Thomas McDonell). However, it doesn’t take long before Clarke realizes that she shares a deeper bond with Lexa, despite the latter being an AI.

“I think what really drove it was that they were two characters that were both in very unique but similar positions and they were able to see a bit of each other in one another, if that makes sense - unlike anyone else,” Debnam-Carey explained during an interview with IGN. “They both had to step up to power at a very young age and that’s a hard thing to do. They kind of missed out having a teenage-hood or a childhood, really.” She also said that the relationship between the characters “actually grew out of a genuine like for each other.”

At the same time, Debnam-Carey also believes that the obvious chemistry between Clarke and Lexa was due to the fact that she had a good working relationship with her co-star. “Eliza and I get along so well, because we’re such good friends, so whenever we’re on set we get along so well that it helped to feel some of that,” the actress said. “But it came as a bit of a surprise to me, the way it unfolded. I didn’t expect for that to happen so quickly. It was alluded to and people were guessing about it for a while but it actually took both of us a little bit by surprise.”

Sadly, the romantic storyline between Lexa and Clarke had to end after Debnam-Carey exited the show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Debnam-Carey revealed she had to leave because of “other obligations in my personal life,” referring to her involvement with the series Fear the Walking Dead. Nonetheless, the way Lexa was killed off (by a stray bullet) left fans furious. The show’s creator and executive producer, Jason Rothenberg, later apologized to fan in an open letter. “The honesty, integrity and vulnerability Eliza Taylor and Alycia Debnam-Carey brought to their characters served as an inspiration for many of our fans,” he wrote. “Their relationship held greater importance than even I realized.”

Since Lexa had died in the series, it didn’t seem like fans would ever see the beloved character again. During the show’s finale, however, Debnam-Carey’s Lexa made a surprise appearance. The actress later took to Twitter to congratulate the show on its remarkable run. “What an honour it was to put on the costume one last time and be reunited with #the100 family for the final episode,” Debnam-Carey wrote. “Congratulations to the extraordinary cast and crew and a HUGE thank you to the most amazing fans.” Meanwhile, Taylor replied to Debnam-Carey’s post saying, “It was such a treat having you back lovely lady. It was like no time had passed. Love ya guts.” In response, Debnam-Carey tweeted, “Truly so special!! Love ya right back.”

Have They Kept In Touch?

The two actresses may now be working on separate projects, but it seems they try to hang out whenever possible. In fact, during an interview with KSiteTV back in 2016, Taylor revealed, “I just saw her the other day – she’s in L.A. at the moment, so we’ve been catching up and having coffees… she’s become one of my closest friends. More recently, the actress also said that she has remained in touch with her former co-star over the years. “Are me and Alycia still in touch? Yes, we are!” Taylor remarked in a video message to a fan. “She sent me the most beautiful message on my birthday & we had a really good chat, so that is always nice. She’s such a special person.”

At the moment, there is no indication that Debnam-Carey and Taylor will be reuniting onscreen again anytime soon. That said, fans can always relive their favorite Clexa moments by streaming The 100 on Netflix. There is also talk of doing a prequel to the series. However, it remains to be seen if Clarke, Lexa, or other fan favorites would be making an appearance.
