The Watch (2012)
Character: Chelsea McAllister (supporting)
Moriarty's debut on the silver screen was in The Watch, where she plays Chelsea McAllister, the daughter of over-protective father Bob (played by Vince Vaughn). Bob belonged to a neighborhood watch of conspiracy theorists in the fictional town of Glenview, Ohio who believed aliens were living among them (it turned out to be true).
While Moriarty played a supporting role, her character was often the catalyst of Vaughn’s (over)actions. The movie was a box-office bomb, but it was Moriarty's first segue into film.
The Kings of Summer (2013)
Character: Kelly (supporting)
The Kings of Summer was a coming-of-age movie that features Nick Robinson (Joe), Moisés Arias (Barggio), and Gabriel Basso (Patrick) as boys who head off into the woods to live after running away from home.
Moriarty played Kelly, the love interest of Joe and later of Patrick. She was part of the friends' fallout but helped by telling Joe's father where the boys were in the woods. The indie movie was screened at the Sundance Film Festival and was well-received. While it received a limited release, it shaped Moriarty's views on acting, helping her hone her craft.
After The Dark/The Philosophers (2014)
Character: Vivian (supporting)
In this science-fiction psychological thriller, Erin Moriarty played one of the 20 students challenged by their philosophy teacher to participate in a post-apocalyptic game where only 10 students will emerge as winners.
Each game round would test the students on various aspects of life and morality, pushing their limits. In the film, Moriarty's character, Vivian, was a zoologist who lost three rounds and was not saved in all three rounds.
This was also a small production with a limited release in Indonesia and the US. After The Dark/The Philosophers received poor reviews from critics and audiences, who suggested the philosophical ideologies raised were superficial.
Blood Father (2016)
Character: Lydia Link (main)
Moriarty's next role was the daughter of a former convict on parole, John Link (played by Mel Gibson), seeking refuge from her estranged father after shooting her drug dealer boyfriend, Jonah. She and her father end up on the run to prevent the cartel from killing them, but they find running is not the answer to the problem.
Blood Father did poorly at the box office, making only $6.9 million on a budget of $15 million, despite the good-to-average reviews it got.
Captain Fantastic (2016)
Character: Claire McCune (supporting)
Captain Fantastic is a film about an idealistic father (Viggo Mortensen) trying to come to terms with the loss of his wife and his persistence in training his six children as critical thinkers in a capitalist world. Erin Moriarty was cast as Claire McMune, a teenager who befriended Mortensen's sons. Her jaded but realistic observations about the world helped them understand the "real" world.
Captain Fantastic was one of the most successful projects among Erin Moriarty’s early movies and TV shows, earning her nominations along with the rest of the cast for best ensemble in a drama.
Within (2016)
Character: Hannah Alexander (main)
Erin Moriarty stars in this horror thriller as Hannah Alexander, who, along with her father and stepmother, moves to a haunted house. Through horrifying events, they find out they are not alone. The movie falls under a generic horror film with a predictable script and expected jump scares.
The Miracle Season (2018)
Character: Kelley Fliehler (main)
In what would be her first lead actor role in a movie, Erin Moriarty stars as Kelley Fliehler, who returns to the Iowa City West High School volleyball team after her best friend Caroline “Line” Found died in an accident. The film is based on a true story, following the aftermath of a star player and how the team persevered in a crisis.
The biopic received mixed reviews but did better than expected at the box office. Variety called Miracle Season formulaic as a sports drama. However, it proved Moriarty had what it took to lead a cast with her spot-on portrayal of an overwhelmed teenager.
The Extraordinary Journey Of The Fakir (2018)
Character: Marie Rivière (supporting)
In 2018, Moriarty also played the role of Marie Riviere, the love interest of magician, Aja (played by Indian actor Dhanush). Globe-trotting in search of his estranged father, Aja experiences a series of adventures that will change his perception of life and living.
Marie and Aja started on the wrong foot, with Aja swindling Marie, but they develop a mutual attraction for each other by the film's end. The Extraordinary Journey of Fakir did not do well upon release, but Moriarty’s good-natured Marie was delightful to watch.
Driven (2018)
Character: Katy Connors (supporting)
This biographical comedy thriller starring Jason Sudeikis, Lee Pace, Judy Greer, Erin Moriarty, and others, was about the life of infamous inventor and automobile engineer John DeLorean (played by Pace) who turned to a life of crime to save his motor company in the 1980s. The film takes the point of view of DeLorean's neighbor and FBI informant, James Hoffman (Sudeikis).
Meanwhile, Erin Moriarty played the role of Katy Connors, the extravagant girlfriend of drug dealer Morgan Hetrick (played by Michael Cudlitz), whom Hoffman and DeLorean work with. While Moriarty's role was fictional, her portrayal of an unhinged Katy was a refreshing and enjoyable watch.
Every Time Fans Thought The Boys Deserved An Emmy
Amazon Prime’s The Boys has been turning heads since its first season in 2019.Monster Party (2018)
Character: Alexis Dawson (supporting)
In this horror thriller, Moriarty plays Alexis Dawson, the daughter of parents in a recovering "addict group". Their group get-together gets invaded by buglers under the guise of caterers. What looked like a well-coordinated burglary ended as prey feasting on the hunter.
Catching Dust (2023)
Character: Geena (main)
Geena (Moriarty) and her spouse, Clyde (Jai Courtney), seek refuge in a solitary trailer in a deserted community in Texas’ Big Bend. As Geena plans to escape from her controlling husband, a new trailer shows up with a couple from New York. The interactions between the two couples would change many things for both sides.
Being Erin Moriarty's first film after breaking out in The Boys, Catching Dust was much anticipated, and she did not disappoint. Moriarty portrayed the frustrations, anxiety, and fear of living under an authoritarian and the hopefulness of seeking her freedom.

Moriarty rose up the ranks in Hollywood as Annie
After appearing in indie films, a couple of unsuccessful movies, and short-lived TV shows, Erin Moriarty finally got her big break in 2019 with The Boys. While Erin Moriarty disliked attending auditions, she knew The Boys would be a perfect fit.
So, when auditions rolled, Moriarty knew the show was for her. "...weirdly enough, one of the indications it would be one of the roles that would be right for me was my first audition was a self-tape and I had so much fun doing it. It made me want the role more," she said.
After making it to the last screen test for the role, show creator Kripke hinted that she was his first choice, telling her, "No matter what the studio decides, creatively we’re rooting for you, and I’m rooting for you and I want you for this."
"And hearing that, made me know that if I didn’t get the role I would have walked away and had respect for Kripke regardless," she recalled of the surreal moment.
Playing the girl-next-door with superpowers in The Boys was what would transform Erin Moriarty's career. Along with meeting great The Boys co-stars she has chemistry with, Moriarty's performance as Starlight easily counts as the best of the group. She is loved by both fans and colleagues — Moriarty's co-stars went as far as defending her when rumors she had had plastic surgery circulated.
Nonetheless, being the breakout star led to more opportunities — and attention — for the actress. Although she focuses on The Boys, Moriarty is willing to expand her career and try new things.
